KRYSTALFLEX® TPU in transportation safety glazing: Clear protection for safer journeys

February 26, 2026

Transportation glazing has evolved over recent decades, from simple weather protection to a critical safety component. Whether deployed in armoured SUVs, high-speed trains, or aircraft canopies, windows are now expected to deliver impact resistance and long-term clarity, while helping to keep vehicle weight under control. A key enabler to achieving this balance is the type of interlayer laminating film selected and, in demanding transportation applications, KRYSTALFLEX® TPU films are widely regarded as among the most capable.

The KRYSTALFLEX® TPU film range is a family of polyether-based thermoplastic polyurethane films, delivering more than 50 years of proven performance in enhancing the functionality of high-performance safety glazing units. Available in multiple thicknesses, the films bond easily to glass, polycarbonate (PC), and acrylic (PMMA) materials, offering:

  • High energy absorption for impact, blast, and ballistic protection
  • Strong adhesion across glass and plastics
  • Resistance to moisture, UV, and temperature extremes
  • Long-term optical clarity.

In addition to their proven protective and durability benefits, KRYSTALFLEX® TPU films offer several further advantages. With no added plasticizers, the TPU films carry a low risk of fogging and perform well with complex, curved glazing designs that are increasingly common in modern vehicles and aircraft. These qualities have made KRYSTALFLEX® TPU films a staple in aerospace, road, rail, military, and other specialized transportation applications.

Around the world, you’ll find KRYSTALFLEX® TPU films hard at work in transportation applications including:

  • Armored and VIP vehicles: helping to meet the highest ballistic standards
  • Rail and metro: creating vandal-resistant, high-clarity side windows and windscreens
  • Aerospace: in lightweight cockpit and canopy glazing that needs extreme impact resistance
  • Commercial and specialty vehicles: including emergency and military vehicles.

Transportation glazing units come under constant, and often severe operational stresses as vehicles move. Stone strikes, pressure fluctuations, vandalism, thermal cycling and exposure to chemicals from cleaning are just some of the challenges faced daily. TPU interlayers thrive faced with these encounters, remaining tough and flexible across wide temperature ranges while adhering reliably to same substrate or hybrid glass–plastic combinations.
